A trader earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the end of January rose in the time leading up to President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which joined the platform recently and took four positions, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that traders estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However the market's assessment had increased to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, indicating a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on inside information," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other traders also made significant sums from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Politicians are starting to take note.

A bill introduced on Monday aims to prohibit federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from elections to politics.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the previous administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
