A extensive search and rescue operation is presently ongoing in the Caribbean region for two unlocated sailboats loaded with relief goods en route from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Naval Rescue Missions Initiated

Mexico has sent navy personnel and military search aircraft to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying no fewer than 9 sailors, according to a military release.

The ships had been expected to reach Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.

Background of Relief to Cuba

Cuba has leaned on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the island grapples with multiple power outages across the country.

"Both skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and each boat are equipped with appropriate safety systems and communication devices," a spokesperson associated with the mission said.

The nine crew members are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their consular staff.

"We are collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.

Previous Aid Shipment

Previously that week, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and warmly received a separate vessel that had carried 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the country.

That vessel, called "Granma 2.0" following the name of the yacht in which Castro landed in Cuba to start the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, delivered solar equipment, drugs, infant formula, bicycles and food.

Larger Geopolitical Context

Charity groups and individuals have primarily led initiatives to deliver critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a fuel embargo on the island nation came into effect.

Global bodies have since raised alarms about "dire" supply shortages, with in excess of 50,000 surgeries called off in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy tensions have intensified lately, with comments from several leaders emphasizing the complex nature of bilateral relations.

Responding to recent proposals, a high-ranking government figure insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of talks were initiated, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The maritime authorities said it was pledged to using every available asset at its disposal to locate the sailboats and guarantee the security of the crews.

To date, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
