Correctional Facilities Cannot Be Resolved Immediately, Government Official States, as Law Enforcement Hunt For Two Individuals Incorrectly Released
Opposition justice spokesperson the shadow minister has described the situation as a "total mess," commenting this morning.
Appearing on a radio program, he pointed to comments made by the justice minister after a previous prisoner release, saying that Lammy would establish stricter verifications.
"There was a delay of six days for the prison service reportedly to even become aware this has happened" and inform the police, Jenrick says, "who are now a week behind in the manhunt to find him."
The opposition figure condemns Lammy's handling during recent PMQs and accuses him of a "complete failure in responsibility."
Speaking about incorrect prison releases more generally, Jenrick underlines that "every single mistaken release [...] is unacceptable."
He admits there were such releases under the former Conservative government, but says the figure "has risen significantly" under the current government.
Advocating more prisons to be built, he continues: "The public expect now are proper safeguards put in place."
"That is a particular bureaucratic error by the justice department overseen by the minister," Jenrick says.
