The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward attendees during a Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. It was essentially an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Context for Owner Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
