Democratic Leaders and Republicans Point Fingers as Federal Closure Begins
National Democratic leaders vowed on Wednesday to bring their case to the American people, stating that the blame for the government closure rests entirely on Donald Trump and the GOP due to their assaults against healthcare benefits. This signals the first government shutdown in almost seven years, with GOP officials squarely blaming their political opponents.
Schumer Outlines Comprehensive Plan
Chuck Schumer declared that his party would fight on several fronts, including “TV stations, social media, in picketing, in protesting, every way” to emphasize their position. In a televised appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, he stated, “Our strategy is to inform the public that Trump bears responsibility for this situation.”
Accusations Fly on Capitol Hill
As debate heated up, Schumer accused the GOP of deliberately misleading by claiming that Democrats had forced the closure to extend healthcare benefits to undocumented immigrants, despite noncitizens being barred from government health programs.
“That’s an effing lie,” Schumer said. “They are afraid of the truth – they know that what they have done has decimated healthcare for 20 million Americans.”

Unions React to Closure
Trade unions for government employees demanded a swift resolution to the shutdown, amid concerns that the Trump administration will use the crisis as an pretext to fire additional government employees.
Trump has warned to terminate “numerous individuals”, adding, “They’re gonna be Democrats.”
An alliance of labor groups, including the prominent labor federation, is suing the administration in the judicial system over the proposed job cuts.
“We urge: restore funding, address medical care issues, and prioritize labor interests,” the federation announced after the shutdown took effect.
Financial Response to Shutdown
Financial markets responded with anxiety. American equities declined in early activity, with the S&P 500 down about 0.5%.
