US air traffic controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they continue to work unpaid during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official told a news outlet on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been missing, leading terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has added to delays due to weather and other issues.

More than three thousand American flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy stated he expects the situation to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," Duffy said in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had met with several controllers to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to find an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he continued.

The secretary further mentioned that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports said flights would be delayed due to a lack of employees - one of the highest after the closure began.

The US government shutdown reached its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second-longest shutdown in history.

He has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would reduce the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to travel by air in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I need my controllers focused on the airspace, not on the finances at home," Duffy stated.

On that day, certain flights were stopped at LAX due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth most active airport in the nation and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel stretching north to the metropolis of Oakland, California.
