A uniquely yellow-colored residential building in the background assisted us locate the video.

Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared earlier today that show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is under way.

The initial step to verify the site from which the images originated relied on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.

Locating other buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the footage were captured.

We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
