NFL Play-Off Picture: Crucial Matchups & Scenarios for the Final Week.
As we head into the final week of the regular NFL campaign, just two postseason berths are still up for grabs. However, a great deal more is on the line, such as the highly desired top seeds in both conferences and four divisional crowns.
The schedule makers have crafted a dramatic finale, with the two remaining play-off positions to be decided in two direct head-to-head contests.
Current NFL Play-Off Standings
American Football Conference Rankings
- Denver Broncos (13-3)
- New England Patriots (13-3)
- Jacksonville (12-4)
- Pittsburgh (9-7) / Baltimore (8-8)
- Houston (11-5)
- L.A. Chargers (11-5)
- Buffalo Bills (11-5)
The winner of the Steelers-Ravens contest will secure the fourth seed and a home game in the first playoff round. At the same time, Buffalo and Los Angeles are locked in as wildcard entrants.
The Texans require a win coupled with a Jacksonville defeat to jump from fifth to third. Denver will secure the #1 ranking with a win, but a loss could open the door for New England or the Jaguars to snatch it.
NFC Standings
- Seattle (13-3)
- Chicago Bears (11-5)
- Philadelphia (11-5)
- Carolina Panthers (8-8) / Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-9)
- San Francisco (12-4)
- L.A. Rams (11-5)
- Green Bay Packers (9-6)
The NFC South will be claimed by the victor of the Carolina-Tampa Bay game, granting them the fourth seed. Notably, Carolina could still claim the division even with a defeat, contingent on other results.
The Packers are set at the seventh spot. The marquee matchup, though, is the battle for the NFC's top seed between Seattle and the 49ers, with a week off and home playoff games on the line.
How the NFL Postseason Works
The top seed in each conference earns a valuable bye week and home-field advantage throughout the postseason.
During the Wild Card round, the remaining six qualified teams face off: the second seed plays the #7 team, third hosts sixth, and #4 faces #5.
In the Divisional Round, the #1 seeds enter the competition, facing the weakest remaining seed. The AFC and NFC championship games are then hosted by the highest seed, underscoring the critical importance of securing that top spot.
Win or Go Home in the AFC North
Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens (01:20, Monday)
This bitter grudge match reaches its climax in the final game of the regular season. The divisional title and a play-off berth at stake, this is a true elimination situation.
The Steelers have been inconsistent this season, while the Ravens struggled early but are still in the hunt. Player availability could be decisive: The Steelers may miss star receiver DK Metcalf, while Baltimore's quarterback Lamar Jackson is questionable with a health issue.
Star rusher Derrick Henry might emerge as the x-factor for the Ravens in what promises to be a physical, low-scoring struggle.
NFC West Showdown for the Top Seed
San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks (01:00, Sunday)
Not only the division title is on the line when the Seahawks visits the 49ers. The victorious team secures the conference's #1 spot and the road to the Super Bowl that comes with it.
This matchup pits an explosive 49ers offense against a dominant Seahawks defense. Since quarterback Brock Purdy came back, the 49ers have been the league's top offense. Conversely, Seattle's unit is rated among the best in the NFL.
Seattle QB their passer must avoid mistakes that have haunted him this season. The team that comes out on top gains a massive advantage for the playoff run.
The NFC South's Uncertain Finish
Carolina Panthers @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (21:30 Saturday)
Neither team enters this contest with strong form. Tampa Bay have lost seven of eight, while the Panthers have missed chances to clinch the division.
For Carolina it's straightforward: a victory gets them in. For Tampa Bay, the scenario is more complex. Even with a win, they need help from the Atlanta-New Orleans game to steal the division crown.
AFC's Top Seed Up for Grabs
Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Tennessee Titans (18:00, Sunday)
New England Patriots vs. Miami Dolphins (21:25, Sunday)
Los Angeles Chargers @ Denver Broncos (21:25, Sunday)
The Denver Broncos hold the cards for the #1 AFC spot. A win over a L.A. Chargers team expected to sit key players gets it done.
If the Broncos lose, the door opens for the Patriots. A Patriots win coupled with a Broncos loss would give the top seed to Bill Belichick's team.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are the dark horse. They require a win and losses by both Denver and New England to achieve an unlikely rise to the top. More pressingly, a Jacksonville defeat could see them passed by the Houston Texans in the AFC South.
