Pat Bamford Signs With Sheffield United After Leading Abusive Chants Targeting Coach Chris Wilder

The striker has signed with Sheffield United only half a year following starting derogatory songs targeting their manager, Wilder.

The 32-year-old striker, a free agent after departing from Leeds United, has signed a deal with the Championship strugglers until January. His lengthy career with Leeds was ended through agreement this past summer.

Among the player's last memorable actions as a Leeds player involved leading abusive chants about Chris Wilder during the club’s promotion celebrations in April. Currently, the one-cap England international will feature under Wilder as the Blades’ manager aims to lift his beloved club away from the bottom places.

Past History Involving the Striker and Wilder

The pair had a past prior to Leeds moved up to the top flight last season and United lost the playoff final by Sunderland. The manager described Bamford as “a muppet” when the roles were reversed during the 2018-19 season and the Blades won direct promotion while Leeds United fell short in the promotion playoffs.

Reconciliation and Looking Ahead

Everything seems to have been put behind them with United, the Championship’s lowest scorers, urgently requiring of a boost up front and Bamford looking to resurrect his playing days.

The Wilder chant spread widely in April. A repentant Patrick along with Leeds boss, Daniel Farke, phoned the Sheffield United manager the following day.

Chris Wilder commented back then: “Spoke with Pat yesterday and I have no problem at all with that. I'm uncertain about the language from a fellow pro! But I valued and respected him calling me.

“We spent 20 minutes and the same again I spoke to Daniel Farke as well and we had a half-hour chat with him and he's a great person, a top guy. Back in my playing days we would give it and take it and that’s part and parcel of football across all levels, including a Sunday morning. I've got absolutely no issue. I am cool with it and I said that to Patrick.”
