Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Remarks

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, reacting to recent criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."

The quarterback's response directly referenced the notorious bounty scandal issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had incentivized team members for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Recent Exchange

The quarterback's response came after Payton made comments after the Broncos' historic 33-32 win over the New York. The coach suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Additionally, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.

Context of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • Wilson was traded to the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245 million extension.
  • The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year prior to the team brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a stint in TV commentary.
  • Payton benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the player from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson stayed on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly split between the quarterback and his coach.
