The Chainsaw Man Film Dominates American Box Office in First Weekend

Can Sony claim to have repeated their success? Coming after the triumph of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in in excess of $600 million globally, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has reached beyond the $100M threshold globally, reaching a worldwide gross of $108M in its opening frame. This movie beat out Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its second week in cinemas, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere featuring Jeremy Allen White ($9M).

Notable Domestic and Worldwide Results

Helmed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a direct continuation of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It grossed over $18 million in the U.S. after a robust five-point-two-million-dollar Saturday box office and $4.5M Sunday. Internationally, the produced by MAPPA movie added $14.7M across 46 Sony markets, resulting in a global sum of $60.4M through Sony distribution (over $43 million overseas, $18.2 million domestic). The studio has not yet revealed its official box office total.

Parallels to Past Blockbuster Anime Movies

Promotional firm White Box Entertainment previously spoke, drawing parallels between the film’s projected performance to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34M in the North America in the year 2022 and debuted with a comparable eighteen million dollars in the U.S.. Reze Arc’s first weekend is in line with that standard, while its $108 million international sum currently tracks slightly below that movie's $166.6 million final run. While it is improbable the Reze Arc movie will earn the box office of smash success the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a major victory for the studio.

Promotional Efforts Boost Success

Along with its affiliate Crunchyroll have skillfully used audience interaction to boost their supremacy at the animated movie market. This film's promotional efforts kicked off at the Anime Expo in LA in summer with a MAPPA panel, special events, and Pochita photo ops, then continued with a significant involvement at New York Comic Con showcasing exclusive clips, audience giveaways, and additional MAPPA panels. Moreover, organizers held an private showing for enthusiasts for general audiences and popular figures too after the last day of the gathering.

What’s Next

2025 stands as a significant period for animated films, and for the company, which has another anime film premiering this year in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
