The network's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family navigate their everyday routines.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
