UK, UN and EU Decry ‘Monumental Injustice’ of Publisher Jimmy Lai’s Lengthy Jail Sentence.
The court decision of pro-democracy activist , a UK passport holder Jimmy Lai to a lengthy prison term in Hong Kong has sparked international condemnation. Advocacy bodies and multiple governments have described the national security convictions influenced by political considerations.
Global Condemnation and Calls for Release
The United Kingdom's foreign affairs chief Yvette Cooper remarked that the two-decade sentence constitutes a de facto life term for the elderly man. She labeled the legal case as having political underpinnings under a law designed to silence those who speak out against China. The Foreign Secretary demanded Hong Kong's authorities to terminate his suffering and free him to his family.
“This verdict highlights how the imprecise and extensive clauses of Hong Kong’s legal framework can be interpreted in contravention of international human rights obligations,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.
A European bloc official, Anitta Hipper, stated the EU “deplores” the outcome of Lai’s prosecution and pushed for his prompt and absolute freedom.
Context of the Prosecution
Jimmy Lai, the force that established the now-shuttered pro-democracy newspaper, was detained following the introduction of a disputed security legislation in Hong Kong. The law was enacted by Beijing after months of pro-democracy protests which Lai and his newspaper supported.
He was found guilty on charges including colluding to publish subversive content and plotting to collaborate with external actors. The latter charges were based on the controversial security law.
A Son’s Anguish
The activist's child, Sebastien, shared that his father fears dying alone separated from his loved ones. The legal team labeled him the “globally most notable prisoner of conscience” currently incarcerated.
Sebastien Lai noted that while the verdict was anticipated, its reality was harsher than imagined, though it brought some “solace” that the court process had concluded.
Political Repercussions
This ruling has cast a shadow over the bilateral relationship. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer claimed to have mentioned Lai’s case in talks with President Xi Jinping earlier this year. Nevertheless, any potential progress towards his release remains unclear.
Sebastien Lai asked the upside to enhanced diplomatic ties between the UK and China, saying it felt “a bit tone deaf.”
Authorities' Statements
On the other hand, the officials from China welcomed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s top official John Lee claimed the ruling demonstrated that “justice is served.”
The mouthpiece of China’s foreign ministry, Lin Jian, called Lai the “mastermind” behind previous protests and stated the legal case had been “justified and legal.” He called on foreign countries to refrain from intervention in China’s internal affairs.
A Defining Moment
Media freedom advocates have described Lai as a icon for declining journalistic independence in Hong Kong. The organization's director general said it was a “bleak moment for those who cherish a free press.”
Boasting a close to 100% rate of guilty verdicts on national security offences, Lai’s lengthy term is seen as the strictest yet handed down under the security statute.
