Watkins Possesses the Edge - However Calvert-Lewin Could Still Secure the International Squad

Just one goal in his first ten Premier League outings this campaign had many doubting if Dominic Calvert-Lewin's peak were behind him.

But, a mere four weeks on, he has become the most discussed attacker in England following scoring seven goals in 6 straight games.

His newest goal, in a 1-1 draw versus Sunderland, brought his season's haul to eight, seeing him become the leading English goalscorer in the Premier League this term.

A Remarkable Resurgence

The 28-year-old signed for Leeds United on a free transfer in the summer, after a nine-year stint with Everton that was hampered by setbacks in its latter stages.

But, the statistics supporting his revival in Daniel Farke's new fast-breaking 3-5-2 formation are extremely impressive.

His six-match scoring streak places him in elite company as just the 11th English player to score in six or more straight Premier League outings.

To put that into perspective, even England captain Harry Kane did not achieve a run this long - his longest stands at two distinct five-match runs.

And the sole English striker to better Calvert-Lewin in the modern era is Jamie Vardy, who went on an eight-game scoring streak for Leicester City in 2019.

The Secret to the Purple Patch?

What is behind Calvert-Lewin so difficult to stop in this period? A latest opponent's manager explained it succinctly.

"He has the perfect timing," the manager remarked. "He's smart and a genuinely top-class striker and he found the timing to arrive at the perfect moment."

That instinct and positional sense inside the box was what turned him into a fan favourite at his former team.

Experts point to the system adjustment to a 3-5-2 as a major factor, enabling a greater number of players to get into the box and occupy defenders, thereby provided the striker additional space.

"He is a classic centre-forward," commented a former professional. "For the goal... it was a neat little flick beyond the keeper, a typical centre-forward's goal."

"I've been through a lot since then. Lots of highs and lots of downs. A test of resolve and I've hung in there and kept going... I've believed in myself and this is the result."

"He looks as in shape as he has in a while," one remarked. "If he maintains this level of form... then he's going to be in a discussion for a World Cup place."

Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa, following a decisive two goals versus Chelsea, is currently considered to be in front in the hierarchy, according to some assessment.

"If you contrast the two players, Watkins has the edge in terms of using his pace to test teams," it was said.

"He also has the edge when it comes to making a decisive impact at a big competition."

Finally, whether Calvert-Lewin will be the squad may depend on how many specialist strikers the head coach decides to include.

"I think it might come down to whether he takes two or three centre-forwards," an expert added. "If it is three, he certainly has a chance."
