What We Know Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 individuals perished and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
