During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive in a realm of memories forged from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their quest for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—a moment that could contain the key to defeating him for good.

The Discovery in the Cavern

When she finds Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. A clever observation a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a child version of Henry find an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event involved more than a simple act of survival.

An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a warship into a realm known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to sell to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Based on what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the container most likely held some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, leading to the awakening of his powers—traits he would later pass on to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the box could have held strange particles that later made its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back after half a day fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he battles the influence of a malevolent force, much like how Will Byers was possessed by the Mind Flayer in the past.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear associated with the mine shows how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. While he controls the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to become stronger.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale ahead.
